	Savanna Wegman is a set and costume designer and writer working across theatre, opera, dance and circus. She is New Zealand born, of Chinese Malaysian and Dutch descent and is now based on unceded Wurundjeri land in Naarm (Melbourne). 

Recent credits include 5 Green Room Nominated set designs&#38;nbsp; 'Pride and Prejudice' (The Bloomshed, 2025)&#38;nbsp; ‘Our Monster’s Name is Jerry’ (Dirty Pennies Theatre, 2025), ‘The Last Train to Madeline’ (Fever103 Theatre, 2024), ‘Biographica’ (Lyric Opera, 2023) and ‘Brittany and The Mannequins’ (Fever103 Theatre, 2022).

Set &#38;amp; Costume Designer ‘Katya Kabanova’ (Victorian Opera), ‘Converted!’ (Sydney Festival, ATYP),&#38;nbsp; ‘Climbers’ (Fever103 Theatre), ‘STAUNCH ASF’ (Amelia Jean O’Leary, Melbourne Fringe), Set Designer 'A Certain Mumble' (Amelia Jean O’Leary, Darebin Arts Speakeasy). 

Savanna has been the associate designer for Marg Howell for ‘My Brilliant Career’ (Melbourne Theatre Company), Anna Cordingley - ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ (Melbourne Theatre Company) and Dann Barber - ‘Candide’ (Victorian Opera), ‘Far Away’ (Patalog Theatre), 'The Crocodile' (Spinning Plates Co.), ‘The Dream Laboratory’ (Essential Theatre) and ‘The Mermaid’ (La Mama).

	Victorian Opera’s production scored at every turn, with a splendid Australian cast, ingenious and creative production, and daring and clever use of live black and white video throughout on a full-stage screen. &#38;nbsp;- Barney Shwartz, The Age&#38;nbsp;

 The visual element of this production was adventurous and conceived in intricate detail. Savanna Wegman’s set and costume design fused beautifully with Fairbairn’s cinematic palette –&#38;nbsp;Heather Leviston, Classic Melbourne&#38;nbsp;

The set was simple but endlessly clever: huge suspended metal frames that hung over the stage like a cage, later lowered and reformed into a boardwalk stretching over a shimmering lake. It managed to feel both industrial and dreamlike, almost a reflection of Katya’s inner thoughts. - Kavya, Its on the house

	Musically intoxicating, visually compelling and powerfully fused performance piece.

The resolution of ideas bristling through Finsterer’s score and Wright’s libretto via Savanna Wegman’s suggestive set and costumes, Niklas Pajanti’s dramatic lighting and Aron Murray’s encompassing video designs – drawing on Cardano’s broad scientific studies including astrology and astronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology – is faultless. 


Ideas relating to an inextricable link between science and religion, the intellectual and visceral, working and personal life and strengths and weaknesses seemingly orbit through the stage rings as Cardano’s complexities are revealed. In doing so, the work effortlessly conveys the omnipresent contradictions rooted in self and the universe.

Visually, Biographica is restrained but consistently interesting, as the designers draw on the art and science of Cardano’s world. Lit from the side with Caravaggio-esque chiaroscuro drama by Niklas Pajanti, Savanna Wegman’s set includes a table laden with objects, like a still-life painting. The stage area is dominated by three large, interlocking elliptical hoops that recall the old celestial spheres, as well as the gimbal, an ancient device Cardano described in detail.&#38;nbsp;
