Savanna Wegman’s set design is inspired. Students crawl across towering wooden balustrades that impressively replicate the age-old rooves of Cambridge in the tight confines of fortyfivedownstairs. Costume design (also by Wegman) offers the perfect nod to the show’s historical setting with combinations of linen whites and off-whites evoking subtleties in character.

The set and costuming are also worth noting, the fine work of Savanna Wegman. Dressed primarily in flouncy, earthy tones, the actors clamber over two whitewashed “rooves” and benches. White sheets flail about like the sails on a clipper ship. Climbers is most impressive.

The complexity of staging this creates becomes increasingly apparent as the importance of each persona to both narrative and characterisation unfolds. The staging is very clever and provides the performers with the opportunity to deliver lines from extraordinary positions and to beautifully recreate the vertiginous nature of their activities.
